On August 1, 2008, the China Audio-Video Copyright Association announced the regional Karaoke rates of copyright royalty standard of 2008 in China. Shanghai has the highest regional rate, 11.1 Yuan/day/room; followed by Beijing at 11 Yuan/day/room, and Zhejiang at 10.3 Yuan/day/room.
The announcement claimed that on the basis of the standard maximum of “12 Yuan/day/room,” which was set by China’s National Copyright Administration in 2006, the regional Karaoke rate copyright royalty would be adjusted by sampling data and different regional conditions. In addition, to encourage Karaoke operators to pay copyright royalties, the operators were given certain incentives. Regarding Karaoke operators who refused to pay the copyright royalties, the China Audio-Video Copyright Association will take powerful steps to attack infringement. Karaoke operators who are already involved in the administrative complaint and civil litigation process will have to pay the maximum rate of “12 Yuan/day/ room.”
